Why I Will Be Carrying My Handgun

First, let me offer a disclaimer. The following blog is real-life as it gets. My mother has never allowed guns in her home. Earliest memories at home were that guns were big bad evil things.

Having said that, my mother is not some crazed fanatic that thinks that guns walk around on their own shooting randomly into crowds of children either.  She's highly intelligent, just very passive in such beliefs as protecting yourself and your family.

She has inquired of me why I believe I must carry my handgun and it was a great opportunity to sit down and compile several random thoughts.  It's great that a person has beliefs.  But it doesn't do much good unless that person can sit down and explain 'why' they have those beliefs in a way that other people can understand.

So... here is my response email to my mother.  We love each other dearly and have been sharing emails back/forth for a day on various issues and this is just one segment of our correspondence of late.  She is wonderful in that she pushes me to really think about the things I believe in.  I love her so much.

Mom;

I got your email just as I was getting to work and have been working on an email back to you while at work.  It’s given me a great project to help me stay awake through the night and it’s been fun.  To answer your question as to why I want to carry my handgun:

Protection of me, my wife and daughter are the main reason I will be carrying a handgun.  Criminals are by their very nature cowards. They pick and choose the best victims for their crimes, hence why there is such a large amount of violent crime perpetrated against woman and the elderly and not against large beefy bikers. Criminals, when interviewed, say that the single greatest worry when they are committing crime is that they will come up against someone that is armed and knows the proper use of that weapon.

Crime statistics say it all. In Washington DC (where until just recently homeowners were unable to arm themselves), the levels of crime are thru the roof, but you can drive just a short distance (less than 5 miles) into Northern Virginia and the crime levels are less than 10% of DC's. The difference?  Virginia allows open carry of a firearm and is a "shall issue" state as far as Concealed Carry Permits are concerned.  The people in Virginia are armed and the criminals would rather go into DC where the victims are unarmed.

Below I copied what someone said very plainly and I thought it explained it pretty well.

My old grandpa said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every man's life when he stops busting knuckles and starts busting caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take an *** whooping."  I don't carry a gun to kill people.  I carry a gun to keep from being killed. I don't carry a gun to scare people.  I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place. I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.  I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.  I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.  I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.  I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.  I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of the government.  I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.  I carry a gun so I that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.  I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.  I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.  I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy. I carry a gun because when I die and go to Heaven, I want to be a cowboy.  I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man.  I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love. I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate.  I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.  I don't carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.  "Police Protection" is an oxymoron.  Free citizens must protect themselves.  Police do not protect you from crime; they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess. Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an *** whooping.

Additionally, I think it’s important for me to show that there is an enormous difference between Ellsworth and where I am living.  Below are the violent crime rates for the entirety of Antrim Co. and compared to Phoenix.  The index ratios are # of crimes per 100,000 people.  That way the population differences are taken into account.

Comparing Antrim Co. vs Phoenix Crime Rates (2005)
(index #) is crime/100,000 population

Crime                    Antrim Co.     (1)                     Phoenix (2)

Murder                   0(0)                                        224(14.5)
Rape                      0(0)                                        533(34.6)
Assault                 12(48)                                     5701(370.2)

Here, you are 770% more likely to be violently attacked, 3460% more likely to have your wife and/or daughter be raped, 1450% more likely to be murdered.

Not only is it the ‘big city’ but we also have a very major problem with convicted murders and rapist illegal aliens that get deported and keep coming back over the border.

A 12 month in depth study by Dr. Deborah Schurman-Kauflin of the Violent Crimes Institute finds that there are currently over 240,000 illegal alien sex offenders in the United States and that 93 more sex offenders are coming into the country illegally every day It also notes that the number of victims per sex offender is 4.  Just think, that's nearly 1,000,000 chances that you or someone you love could be sexually assaulted by someone who shouldn't even be in this country.  Of particular note is that nearly 63% of the offenders had been deported on different offenses at least one time. (3)

Illegal aliens are filling our jails here and the federal government isn’t doing their job and deporting them.  We have tent-cities filled with illegal aliens waiting for the federal government to deport them.  Knowing; that until a fence is built and manned on the border they will just come right back and continue killing and raping us.

Illegal Immigrant Crime Numbers Released

PHOENIX -- Crime is ever present, but new numbers give a glimpse into how much is linked to illegal immigrants.

According to statistics obtained by CBS 5 News, 19 percent of the inmates in Maricopa County Jail are suspected illegal immigrants being held on an immigration or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcementhold.

In Pima County, the number of inmates suspected of being illegal immigrants is around 10 percent.

In Pinal County, the number of inmates suspected of being illegal immigrants is around 30 percent.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said if Gov. Jan Brewer signs the immigration bill to toughen Arizona's immigration laws, the amount of crime in local communities would drop dramatically.

"These are people that are always armed and they're creating an extreme risk to my deputies -- and that, I'm not going to tolerate," said Babeu.

Pinal County is where we are moving to; it’s closer to the Mexican border.  It’s double the illegal aliens caught than in the county Phoenix is in.

Thank you for inspiring me to sit down and gather information and compile my beliefs with actual facts.  It’s not much good to believe something unless you can express why you believe it.  This has given me the chance to organize my thoughts and to get them out in an orderly fashion.

Great job. We should always back our beliefs by facts. It's hard to dispute when the facts are in black and white.

Even if you can't persuade her to accepting the fact you want to carry a gun, she will have to agree with the logic.

In a corrupted world like ours, love doesn't always prevail. As much as christians would like to believe that, the cruel reality is that society, for a large part, is engulfed in self importance, and carnality takes the lead over spirituality.
It's a dog eat dog world.
